About Item: Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1855. Prize Essay on the use and abuse of alcoholic liquors in health and disease with a preface by D. F. Condie, M.D. Also included and pasted onto inside front cover is a pamplet promoting the book "Alcohol: Its Influence on Mind and Body by Edwin F. Bowers, MD" No date appears on the pamphlet, but it appears original to the book. Pamplet has caused a discolored area on both the inside front cover and the half title page opposite. 178 pages followed by a 12 page Blanchard & Lee publisher's catalogue. Dark brown decorative cloth has embossed design on front and back. Wear to bumped corners and some small chipping edgewear, backstrap missing. A couple previously folded page corners, we note an owner's stamp on at least four pages and a penciled notation on fep.
