New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. Very rare 1923 First Edition 8vo size green clothbound hardcover, with gilt titles on spine and front cover; 266 deckle edged pages. Thomas Boyd (1898-1935) was a young United States Marine who served in France during World War I. After the war he became a journalist and later opened a bookstore in St. Paul, Minnesota. Other writers, including Sinclair Lewis, who came into his bookstore encouraged him to write about his own World War I experiences. Through the Wheat was Boyd's first novel. Protagonist William Hicks, like Boyd, is a young Marine serving in France. Submitted to Scribner's in 1922, Through the Wheat was rejected by editor Maxwell Perkins. According to prabook.com, "F.
