About Item
New York: Oxford University Press, 1969., 1969. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Red cloth decorations and titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, map on front and rear endpapers, ix [blank], 245 pp., preface, illustrated from photographs, portraits, notes, bibliography, index. The surrender in 1886 of Geronimo, the Apache war leader, to Lt. Gatewood brought to an end a struggle that had endured for ten years. After the campaign ended the author deals with the betrayal of the U. S. Government to the Indians whereby this political move brought shame to the U.S. Army, especially after General Crook was relieved of his command and destroyed the trust that Geronimo had for the treaty. Lt. Gatewood and Gen. Crook were two men who were trusted by Geronimo. Fine, bright copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket.
