First separate edition of this story by Restif De La Brettone (1734-1806), libertine French printer and writer, the prolific author of more than 200 rambling novels and memoirs, often risqué or pornographic but laced with sentimental moralizing. Memorably described by the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica as a man who was "inordinately vain, of extremely relaxed morals, and perhaps not entirely sane.
