The author, Lt. Colonel Vaughan, commanded one of the first units to arrive at the Legation Quarter. The new edition is fully illustrated with eight black and white photographs and a sketch, four pages of colour reproductions of Vaughan's paintings of soldiers of the multi-national force, including Russian Cossacks and Japanese Cavalry, and four maps.
