London: J Newbery , 1758. First edition. Disbound. Good Only. 4.5" by 3.5". None. A very scarce, first edition, first impression of this cartography work by John Gibson. Comprising of fifty two maps total. The very scarce first edition, first impression. With the errata to the index stating the error to the Africa map. Also with contemporary hand coloured. Many, if not most copies were not coloured. Engraved with a frontispiece, title page and fifty two maps. All of the maps have been drawn and engraved by Gibson and are beautifully hand-coloured. The work has been edited by Emanuel Bowen, the Geographer to his majesty. Bowen was a Welsh map engraver who was the mapmaker to both King George II of England and Louis XV of France. Bowen was regarded as producing some of the largest, most detailed maps of his era. John Gibson was an English cartographer, draughtsman and engraver. This is his best known work.
