About Item: Paris: J. Hetzel et A. Lacroix, 1870. Victor Hugo's epic historical novel was first published in 1862. Despite its popularity, early editions are rare. This is a Very Good copy of a French printing from only eight years after the First Edition. Large, heavy octavo, bound with green leather spine and tips; gilt titling on the spine, with five raised bands. Clean text; 799 pages, with a one-page advert in the rear. Marbled endpapers. Contains some 200 illustrative engravings. The first 28 pages have archival tape repairs to tears at the bottom of the page; this is the only defect within the textblock. Although rubbed at the margins, the book retains a significant and attractive presence.. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
