Description:
Washington, D.C.: Union Congressional Committee, 1864. Good. Toned, short tears, chipping, dust soiling.. A fiery political pamphlet published by the Union Congressional Committee, penned to discourage other Northerners from supporting George Hunt Pendleton's (ultimately unsuccessful) bid for Vice President. Pendleton had emerged by 1864 as a leader in the "Copperhead" faction of congress, otherwise known as the "Peace Democrats", so named for their push for peace with the South. The present pamphlet argues that this push for peace was, in practice, a boon to the South. Single vol. (9.5" by 6"), pp. 8, unbound.

Description:
Washington, D.C., 1864. Original Sewn Wrappers. Very Good binding. Two campaign pamphlets criticizing George Pendleton, who ran as the 'Copperhead' vice-presidential candidate in 1864 against Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. The 'Copperhead' party favored peace with the Confederacy, a platform the pamphlets lambast: "[They] encourage the armed enemies of the country, and [...] foster secession and treason of all kinds and grades." The other: "A few base and infamous men in the North have sometimes undertaken the ignoble task of excusing the traitors." The final page of The Great Surrender states "there is but two months between this and the election," dating this publication to August or September of 1864. Pendleton's Democratic ticket was soundly defeated, winning only 21 of 233 electoral votes. Minor horizontal creasing. Eight page pamphlet. Very Good condition. Housed in an elaborate black buckram slipcase, with a red leather label on the spine. Very Good binding.
