"...For this story, Wolfe developed a foil for Eugene [Gant], a character named Frank Starwick, an intelligent and sensitive young man but also a pretentious aesthete whose response to life and art contrasted sharply with that of Eugene...". Mr. Kennedy (the Editor) goes on to recollect Wolfe's difficulty with writing the novel, and Wolfe's seeking assistance from his own editor Maxwell Perkins. Perkins advised that a number of sections should be cut.
