London: John Snow, 1839., 1839. 8vo. pp. xviii, [2], 506. wood-engraved title vignette. wood-engraved frontis. printed in oil colours by George Baxter, folding map, 5 wood-engraved plates, & numerous text illus. contemporary blind-stamped calf, all edges gilt (extremities worn, front joint split & holding by cords, some foxing to frontis. & outer leaves). "Fourteenth Thousand". Williams was sent by the London Missionary Society to South Sea Islands in 1816. He established headquarters at Raiatea (Leeward Islands), and conducted missionary tours to the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and neighbouring islands. In November, 1839, he was killed by cannibals at Erromanga in the New Hebrides. "Williams was the most sucessful missionary of modern times.
