This edition is not in Sadleir, Wolff, or Parrish. But it is cited by Todd / Bowden #972 [Tauchnitz International Editions]. This copy has Todd / Bowden's title leaf variant 2, i.e. Leipzig / Bernhard Tauchnitz / [date]; and their copyright variant C3: i. e: "Printing Office of the Publisher." [This copy has the "Erlowest, Lake George" bookplate of Edward M. Shepard. According to the DAB, Edward Morse Shepard (1850-1911) was born in New York. Raised in Brooklyn, he spent his summers at Lake George. Shepard was a highly skilled lawyer and an active reformer against the corruption of Tammany Hall. He accepted the nomination for mayor of New York in 1901. It was Shepard, along with Everett Wheeler, who drew up the bill that applied the principles of civil service to New York.… Read More
