Beautiful newer endpapers multi color and gilt floral designs. Some very minor foxing and a short clean tear to p19 of vol.2 no affect else the books are near fine. Nice set priced to go. The Sketch Book is a collection of essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. The collection includes two of Irvings best known stories - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Irvings use of the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon was employed throughout his career.

Name in ink on front pastedown and ffep. Ships wrapped in bubble wrap and packed securely in a box.

New York: C.S. Van Winkle 101 Greenwich street, 1819-1820. Mixed printings. Full leather. Very good. Octavo, Part 1 is a second printing, parts 2-6 are printed one year after the first printing 1820 with no textural difference. (BAL) part 7 match BAL (10106) for second printing. A very good set in period mottled brown leather, rubbed along the comers, starting along the front gutter of volume 2 inner hinge cracked, and both with blank endpapers, indicating an early repair as rear endpapers are period marbled . Spines nicked but an attractive set with original labels .

London: John Murray, 1821 326 pages. "Fifth Edition" stated on title page. Only volume one is being offered (volume two is missing). Full black leather stamped in blind with titles in gilt on the spine. The binding is generally rubbed with shallow loss to head of spine. Signed and inscribed on a blank leaf before the title page: "Mary Story / from her sincere friend / Washington Irving / London May 7th 1822." Books signed by Irving are rare, but especially with such an early inscription and "The Sketch Book" is his most famous work. The volume includes "Rip Van Winkle.". 5th or later Edition. Hardcover.
