When elections were held in the spring of 1855, several thousand Missouri men, called "border ruffians" by their enemies, illegally voted and insured that a pro-slavery legislature was elected. Anti-slavery settlers cried foul and refused to join the new government. INstead they set up their own state government, operating under an anti-slavery constitution. Frankli n PIerce denounced the free soil settlers as traitors, and bloodshed followed. .
