New York, NY: D. Appleton & Company, 1871. [Alpine Climbing and Mountaineering] FIRST US EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.xii; 473 [9]. With seven engraved plates, including a frontispiece, and occasional in-text illustrations. Publisher's brown cloth, with gilt titles to spine, and black panelled decoration to boards. Lightly toned throughout, with a tobacco scent. One central gathering slightly proud. Light wear and bumping to cloth, with a large repair to head of spine. Very good. As well as a pioneering physicist, Tyndall was also a serious mountaineer who took part in some of the earliest assents of Weisshorn and the Matterhorn in the 1860's. This book chronicling his Alpine exploits was intended to complement his earlier collection 'Fragments of Science for Unscientific People' (1871).
