Good-VG. 16.5 Cms x 23 Cms. f/piece (engr. of Mercury by W.Sharp)+liv+(4)+739+(1)(Addendum), pub.lists on endpapers and pastedowns. A nice copy, f/piece offset onto t.p. as usual, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked, fr. end-gutter split but quite secure, v.sl.splitting to rear end-gutter of little significance. The elaborately blind-stamped covers are now of an indeterminate brownish colour but have originally been purple or mauve, clean, corners sl.bumped, top sp.v.slightly rubbed, cloth starting to split along lower of third front joint. Appears to be a reissue of the 1829 2nd ed, but one of the notes on the final addenda page is dated Nov.20, 1839. A very acceptable copy of this important, if quirky, linguistic classic.

Easy to read and use and will last a lifetime or more. Complete in all other respects including preliminary pages and index. Besides missing the engraving the contents are very decent. Publisher's cloth, top margin uncut, some weakness between pp. 272 and 273 but otherwise binding holding well. No inscriptions other than one small circular label with handwritten number at foot of spine. liii, (1), 739, (1) pp., frontispiece engraved by W. Sharp. A very discursive English grammar?

John Horne (1736-1812), later known as John Horne Tooke began his celebrity when he became an enthusiastic partisan of Wilkes in 1768. They made a good pair. Horne loved battles of wits and legal maneuvering, and he sympathized with every cause for liberty, including the French Revolution, and the independence of the American Colonies. Wilkes and Horne later came to bitter disagreement and fought a war of 'Letters'. The redoubtable Junius entered the controversy on Wilkes's side. Horne retorted vigorously, and proved the most successful critic of that famous agitator. Tooke is regarded as the "father of rational philology;" this is his general theory of languge and the mind. Dark green embossed cloth covers, 740 pages. The first 10 pages have a little foxing; spine top and corners slightly bumped, front endpages have owner's stamp and small stains. May require extra postage; please inquire.; 6 x 9

Sharp, and one additional engraved plate facing p. 454. Full contemporary speckled calf, dark red and black morocco spine labels. Part 1 boards smoked at the fore-edges, front board nearly detached, dampstain to the first and last ten leaves, else good, internal text pages are clean and tight. Part 2 boards and text block a bit warped, with staining from exposure to a fire, thus fair only. From the library of the artists Ben Shahn and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with an estate label designed by their son, Jonathan Shahn. Both volumes are signed by Bernarda Shahn, with a black & white photograph of a "House built by Jonathan Perkins Weethee, Summer of 1951, before the fire" laid-in. *ESTC* T32791.
