Quarto; this copy in a later binding of pale blue cloth backed in tan buckram, with the original title label preserved; [12], 13-931 pages; with 7 plates of portrait This is the First Edition of Ed Thompson's history of the so-called Orphan Brigade" which was expanded 30 years later as the History of the Orphan Brigade {n.b. this edition has 931 pages, and the 1898 expanded edition has 1104 pages). Of the expanded edition Bid Robertson allows that it possesses "everything from rosters to tall tales" and "is a standard source for any study of the Western theater." ~~This later binding is not unattractive. (Howes T-193; Nevins I, 168). Very Good binding.

Cincinnati, OH: Caxton Publishing House. Good+. 1868. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 931 pp; Full embossed leather. Edge wear especially at the corners, top and bottome has 1/4 inch chipped away, spine tears & cracks repaired with clear tape. Interior light and occasional foxing, endpapers have penciled previous owner's name and nameplate, and rear hinge is beginning to crack at pastedown but holding firm. Top corner of pages 168 to 170 is missing 1 inch, not affecting text. Still a nice tight book with embossed boards, a solid binding and a tight text. This classic of Kentucky history includes a history of the major battles fought, biographies of important figures, and detailed company rosters. Margin notes in pencil especially in the company rosters, appears to have been made by a member of the brigade. ; Always Delivery Confirmation. 35 Years Fast Excellent Service. Gum label at spine base. 931pp. Front pastedown with the bookplate of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, and rubberstamp on blank portion of title page. Text clean. Six full-page steel engravings, including the frontis of John Breckinridge. The list of engravings calls for one of General Buckner, but it was not bound into this copy. Else Very Good. First edition of the history of the famed Orphan Brigade, which saw action in many of the major battles of the War, including Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, and Chickamauga.
