Presentation Copy, "With the compliments / of / Madeleine B. Stern". Laid in is the address label to James Sandoe, the Book Reviewer of the New York Herald Tribune. Sandoe compiled this for his Chicago bookseller friend, Arthur Lovell (who also encouraged Vincent Starrett). "Holmes's methods of acquisition and his secretiveness about his rarities are discussed and his suppliers are identified - DeWaal C9409." Stern was an outstanding rare book seller in New York City.
