The second edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, an illustrated title page in colour, a full-page map, fourteen black-and-white plates, and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852) was an American explorer, writer, and diplomat. Stephens helped to raise awareness of the Maya civilization in Middle America, as well as aiding the planning of the Panama railroad. This is an account of his travels in Egypt and Nubia, with a chapter on the Suez Canal, which was completed in 1869. This work was published by Marcus Ward and Sons, who became very successful in the area of colour lithography, winning a medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
