Half-morocco and pebbled cloth, spine gilt in compartments, corners and spine rubbed with some losses, all edges colored red; interior joints partially detached, text toned, occasional browning and foxing. First edition of an exquisitely illustrated and extremely important travel book detailing the history, culture, and religions of Israel and Palestine. Travel to the Holy Land was becoming increasingly popular in the nineteenth century, and this particular work provided an extensive visual representation that gained great attention in America, Great Britain and the Continent. Stebbing strives to describe the topographical scenes as accurately as possible, peppering in historical details when appropriate. Erste Auflage William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), britischer Illustrator, der vor allem für seine zahlreichen Stahlstiche bekannt ist. Eine von Bartletts Besonderheiten war, dass er für seine Landschaftsstiche immer selbst zu den entsprechenden Orten reiste und nicht mit Skizzen arbeitete wie die meisten seiner Kollegen.
