Solzhenitsyn, made internationally famous in 1962 by the publication of his novel, 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' considers 'Cancer Ward' his most important. It portrays the relationships of a group of people in a cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital, from under normal conditions to their eleventh hour of illness. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely echo Solzhenitsyn's own, himself becoming a cancer ward patient in the mid 1950s, after being release from a concentration camp.
