Title, two pages of prefatory explanation, both on rectos, followed by sixteen color plates, each with sidebar textual description. The striking illustrations, all of clouds, are based on paintings by Rudolf Cronau, who in turn relied on photographs by the Hydrographer's office and others, and the lithography is by the pre-eminent American printer, L. Prang & Co. of Boston. Captain Sigsbee, and later Rear Admiral Sigsbee, the author, was the commander of the ill-fated USS Maine, which exploded in Havana Harbor in 1898, an event that was the catalyst for the Spanish-American War. Besides that particular event, however, Sigsbee was an influential oceanographer, and he developed the Sigsbee sounding machine which became standard equipment in deep water oceanography for fifty years afterward.
