One hundred years ago, Mendele was well known to the Jews of Russia and Poland as a man who traveled from town to town in a horse-drawn cart, selling books, listening to everyone's troubles, and writing stories about them. These Jews knew Mendele well--so well that they also knew there was no such person. Mendele the Book Peddlar was the fictional creation of Sholem Jacob Abramovitch.
