Henley Smith who served in Company D of the 43th Battalion of the Virginia Cavalry (Mosby's Rangers). Binding is a rust colored cloth with gilt titles and decoration (a mounted cavalryman charging with drawn pistol and plumed hat on spine). Covers show wear -- spine ends missing about 1/8" and mended tear to top 1/2" of spine. There is a 1.5" split in the cloth outer hinge at top right of spine. Light general soiling to covers. Corners worn through. A small newspaper clipping concerning the publication of a book vindicating Stuart's actions at Gettysburg has been glued to the corner of a a blank page leaving a discolored image on the page opposite. New York : Harper & Brothers, 1867 Bound in tan cloth with red and black morocco spine labels in a manner that looks like a period law book, 492 pp. An unusually nice copy but with the following flaws: light finger soil; one sig comprising two leaves reattached with archival glue with the two leaves-the last page of the index and the fold out map reinforced on the edges with clear but now yellowed tape with the index on the fore edge and a small spot on bottom edge and the map on the bottom edge. The red spine label with a scuff mark and the black label with a small tear at the bottom edge. Also five specks of roller spray from paint on the front cover. Still a handsome, outstanding copy.
