London: John Churchill, 1861 Poor Copy quarter bound in clf with raised bands on spine. Leath spine has puncture mark in centre and has become detached pn one side. Calf is very battered and front board has become detached. Previous owners inscription on front end papers. Quite a few folios have become detached and are laid in. Some staining and ink marking to folio fore-edges though body of numerous b/w plates are clean.

Scattered foxing, front free end paper lacking, front inner hinge starting. Previous owner signature (Philander H. Harris Paterson NJ 1893). A good reading copy, as is.

Remarkably well illustrated, in this case by 142 figures, this being the Second American edition, revised, published in Philadelphia, 1843, bound in the original publisher's full brown calf binding with black title plate, gilt lettered title thereover, and private library number on spine. One-inch crack at bottom of front joint, otherwise boards securely attached. Leather scuffed, corners bumped and chipped. One signature starting, else still quite sturdy. Prior 19th century owner's inscription at front paste-down and his bookplate opposite, dated underneath with a flourish in 1872, and then 21st century owner’s writing (being of a rare book dealer) at recto of first free endpaper, being of some ornate gift inscription from Andrew Franklin Leary to Patrick "Blue"… Read More

Ink presentation inscriptions from 1932 and 1961 on end papers from Dr. to Dr. Old pencil price of $3.70 plus signature Rbt Pennrick(?). Some pencil marginalia, i.e "Use tallow candle" and "chloroform relaxes" in old pencil. Some few pages with more modern in marginalia and some underlining. Light foxing within, most plates very good indeed.; 540 pages .
