The boards are much worn all about. They are scuffed, marked, rubbed. The spine has wear from head to foot, but retains a shabby stateliness. The back board face has injury and wear. The boards and spine are fit and sturdy. The gutterings along the end papers have been repaired, at some time, by packing tape (!). The end papers have wear. The very early and late pages are smudged, marked by hand and age. They are clear, convivial, neat, sound, occasionally annotated, occasionally marked by age, companionable.
