Description:
Hodder & Stoughton, 1913. 1st edition. Hardcover. Cream paper-covered boards and grey cloth spine with gilt lettering, a little rubbed, square binding, endpapers with slight browning, pages clean bar a little occasional spotting, with 24 tipped-in colour plates by Kay Nielsen, each with captioned tissue guards, and over 15 monotone decorations throughout. Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, then King Edward V11 Professor of English Literature at Cambridge University, was asked by the publisher to retell a number of old fairy stories to complement illustrations by the then-unpublished Danish artist Kay Nielsen. Nielsen's first commission is generally regarded as one of his finest works. Laid in loosely is a plate from Nielsen's book the following year, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, as well as a page and some images from a contemporary magazine about the exhibition of Nielsen's drawings at the Dowdeswell Galleries in New Bond Street in July 1912. A very good copy of this attractive book.

Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1913 A good copy of the 1st trade edition of 'In Powder and Crinoline' with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but 1913. This was Kay Nielsen's first published book illustration and his reputation was such that Arthur Quiller-Couch was commissioned to find and rewrite the fairy tales to the title chosen by Nielsen. His illustrations are unique and unforgettable. This copy is in the publisher's quarter cloth binding with grey card boards. The spine has gilt titles and designs and the front board has red titles and grey illustration. The binding is sound but with the usual wear: pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and edge wear to the boards with some browning and marking. The decorative endpapers are present with some light browning and there is some repair to the front endpaper joint. Contents are complete including half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; title page on thick grey paper with red lettering;…

London: Hodder & Stoughton, no date [1913]. [Children's Illustrated] FIRST EDITION. Quarto (32 x 26cm), pp.164. With 24 mounted colour plates, including a frontispiece, each with a captioned tissue guard. Re-bound later in the twentieth century in tan quarter cloth with grey paper over boards and green titles to plain paper labels on spine and upper. With the original endpapers, repaired to hinges. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Repairs to chipped and torn endpapers. Heavily browned to edges and margins, otherwise clean internally. Spine label toned and lightly chipped. Very good. A novel collection of Fairy Tales proposed by the illustrator Kay Nielson, who wanted to illustrate fanciful tales from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but found little obvious material from the latter period. The novelist and critic Quiller-Couch was therefore recruited to assemble this interesting mix of stories, drawn from several different traditions. Inevitably, powdered wigs and beauty spots abound in the…

Description:
1913. Original artwork from the artist's first major success Published within In Powder and Crinoline, sub-titled "Old Fairy Tales Retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch", in 1913. This fine watercolour was originally reproduced opposite page 124 and is one of the 26 colour plates. The illustration accompanies the tale of "The Man Who Never Laughed". Writing about "some of the new gift books" in the 1913 Christmas issue of The Bookman, A. St John Adcock stated "Kay Nielsen is a young artist of curiously original gifts. There are traces in his drawings for In Powder and Crinoline of the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, and there are also an imaginative daring, a fantasy, a fascinating grace and decorative loveliness that are peculiarly his own and make his art unique amongst the illustrations of this year's books". Original drawing (297 x 257 mm) on card, laid down on board, fine ink and watercolour, signed and dated ("Kay Nielsen 13") lower left, mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 555 x 489 mm).…
