Her progressive views of gender and race helped spearhead later Chicana feminist movements as she explored equality in race, gender, culture, nationality, and ethnicity. Her first novel, Step Down, Elder Brother, is a fervent story of a Mexican family whose sons and daughters bring new meaning and ideologies to their traditional beliefs through trial, rebellion, spiritual awakenings, and familial duty.
