Bumped corners. 7-inch record is in very good+ condition. Paper sleeve is in very good condition with light toning, two small tan stains on back and one removal scar back cover also. There is a small white superficial mark on front and possible sticker residue bottom left corner. Considering its age the record looks great.

Facing Spanish and English text. Shoulders with splitting that has been neatly strengthened but still visible, slight loss at the spine ends, boards with light soil and some bumping, about very good; the interior is bright and fine. A very nicely printed volume, one of an unspecified number of copies but *OCLC* states an edition of only 50 copies.

Translated and printed by Howard Zimmon in red, ochre, and black. An exacting work of printing, especially so with Neruda's Spanish and Zimmon's English appearing on facing pages, arriving at an important time on two fronts: Neruda received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971, and in 1970 the edition's dedicatee, Mary Vecchio, was photographed in the immediate aftermath of the Kent State Shootings kneeling over the body of Jeffrey Miller. Inspired by his journey to the ancient Peruvian city nestled in the Andes, the poem would later become the second part of Neruda's Canto General. Loyola 313; Becco 97; Fisher 47. One of 1,000 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.529. Quarto (27cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [ii],[4],5-77,[5]pp; with photographic illustrations throughout by Martin Chambi. Moderate wear to wrapper extremities, with some toning and scattered soil to same, and a few contemporary holograph notes (in ink) on rear wrapper; Chilean booksellers rubber-stamp to preliminary blank, with scattered foxing to text edges and margins; Very Good, lacking the bibliographic insert on green stock.

Chile: Nascimento, 1954. First printing of this edition. One of 1000 numbered copies (this being No. 680) SIGNED by the author. This copy retains the scarce insert on green paper that was issued with all copies, a bibliographic note on the genesis and publication history of the poem by Jorge Sanhueza. The first definitive edition of the poems, including the Chambi photographs referenced in "The Latin American Photobook." The poems first appeared as "Canto II" in Neruda's "Canto General" (1950), and have regularly been translated into English. Moderate toning and light rubbing overall, with light bumps at the extremities, else Near Fine. A superior example of a title not often found in collectible condition. Becco 84. Loyola 292. Library stamp on front blank. Edges moderately worn worn, lower wrap lightly stained, top corner creased throughout, spine lightly toned with a bit of loss at the crown and a tiny horizontal tear, very good and sound, lacking the insert. Copy 593 of 1,000 numbered copies Signed by Neruda.

Santiago de Chile: Ediciones de Libreria Neira, 1948. First edition. The first edition of Neruda's masterpiece, later incorporated into Canto General. One of 500 copies numbered in Arabic, an additional 20 numbered in Roman were not for sale. Folio, 25 x 38 cm. 48 pages, 7 full page woodcuts by José Venturelli. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943, however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it, and began to publish his translations in January, 1946, but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore, a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers, a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book scarce in commerce. Becco 84; Loyola 292 (misdated as 1947).

Very Good, with spine showing a neat repair, and front cover joint about 1/3 split at bottom edge. Wraps show toning and light wear, especially at yapped edges, light rubbing. Pages toned. A lovely copy of this fragile production of one of Neruda's best-known longer poetic works.

Copy number 993 of 1,000, signed by Pablo Neruda on the limitation page. Very Good with light lean to spine, light general wear and light creasing to wraps, light edge wear and toning. With green paper insert present at rear, causing some offsetting to inside of rear cover. Illustrated with black and white photographs by Martin Chambi throughout.

With 11 photographs by Chambi; 4-page bibliography by Jorge Sanhueza loosely inserted, as issued. Wrappers slightly marked, glassine creased and torn at extremities, a few small chips to extremities, a near-fine copy.
