Seine wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen erstreckten sich beinahe auf alle Gebiete der Botanik, vor allem aber förderte er die Pflanzenanatomie und machte speziell das feste Zellstoffgerüst der Pflanzen zum Gegenstand eingehender und erfolgreicher Untersuchungen.Auch Physiologie und Entwicklungsgeschichte wurde von ihm gefördert.
