Description:
London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1875. 8vo, pp. 368. Black and white illustrations within pagination. Original blue cloth, front board and spine elaborately blocked in gilt and black, rear board blocked in blind, all edges gilt. Some spotting. Binding rubbed to extremities, spine dulled, ends bumped, front hinge cracked. Printed prize bookplate awarded to a Miss Lizzie McMillan in 1883. The first English translation of the second collaborative work between Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and his second wife, Athénaïs Michelet (1826-1899), who is credited with inspiring and encouraging her husband’s interest in natural history. Though only his name is printed, in their first collaborative work ‘The Bird’ Michelet acknowledges his wife’s integral role: ‘The book which I now publish may be described as the offspring of the domestic circle and the home fireside... of the two souls to which it owes its existence, one was the more powerfully… Read More

Pp. xii, 368, frontis plate "The Pursuit", 140 illustrations, many full-pate plates, index, large octavo format in burgundy full-leather calf fine binding, with gilt rules to front and rear, spine with six compartments (five raised bands) gilt decorations, black spine label with gilt titles, marbled endpapers and page edges. A superb fine binding production. Externally Very Good with expected wear to the tips (boards exposed a bit, moreso at the lower tips), modest wear along spine-edges and spine-ends, but only slight loss. Spine titles very legible. Hinges and endpapers are in excellent condition, not cracked or loose at all. No noticeable odours to the book. The only issue that prevents a Very Good designation is scattered foxing affecting many of the pages, moreso the preliminaries and last few leaves. Some of the plates have some foxing, others… Read More

Description:
London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1875. First edition of this elaborately illustrated work. Octavo, bound in full morocco with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine and panels, inner dentelles, all edges gilt, with 140 illustrations by Giacomelli. Decorated with a hidden double fore-edge painting displaying landscapes of Boston and Philadelphia. In very good condition. The first known example of a disappearing fore-edge painting (where the painting is not visible when the book is closed) dates back to 1649. Around 1750, the subject matter of fore-edge paintings changed from simply decorative or heraldic designs to landscapes, portraits and religious scenes, usually painted in full color. The technique was popularized in the 18th century by John Brindley (1732-1756), publisher and bookbinder to the Prince of Wales and Edwards of Halifax, a distinguished family of bookbinders and booksellers. The majority of extant examples of fore-edge paintings date to the late 19th and early 20th century on… Read More
