The Liberator ran between 1831 and 1865 with the purpose of spreading anti-slavery sentiment and propagating the abolitionist cause. It was the most widely circulated liberationist newspaper during the Civil War and antebellum period. Famously, The Liberator denounced the Constitution, a controversial decision which resulted in an eventual split between Frederick Douglass and the newspaper's white founder William Lloyd Garrison.
