Tight, square, uncreased spine has some toning and a small, cosmetic abrasion. Clean, unmarked interior. Covers have some very light edge-wear and areas of subtle soiling/rubbing. There is a very light crease to the upper fore-edge corner of the front cover. Fantastically morose cover portrait (credited to Sewell) on this novel by the writer/artist who W. H. Auden called 'that lonely old volcano of the Right'. This is the second book in The Human Age trilogy, which was patterned after Dante's Divine Comedy, and it relates a journey through Purgatory and ends with an angelic battle. A scarce reprint published by John Calder, who was key in launching the careers of nouveau romanists Alain Robbe-Grillet, Marguerite Duras, and Nathalie Sarraute. 254 pp.

Wyndham Lewis' trilogy The Human Age, comprising The Childermass (1928), one of 2500 trade copies of which 1000 were destroyed by the publisher, and Monstre Gai and Malign Fiesta, which were published together in 1955, in response to a request from the BBC for Wyndham Lewis to complete the work for broadcast purposes, on the condition that the radio dramatisation was given precedence. First edition, inscribed 'To Geoffrey Bridson – you who did so much to make the completion of this book possible, and who was chiefly responsible for its translation into Radio drama – I salute you. / Wyndham Lewis'. After the broadcast of Bridson's production of The Childermass (1928) on 18 June 1951, the BBC commissioned Lewis to complete the trilogy 'on the condition that when they were finished similar broadcast dramatizations would precede book publication. As a result of this sponsorship – largely the work of B.B.C. producer D. G. Bridson – Lewis was able to write Monstre Gai and Malign Fiesta' (Morrow & Lafourcade). When the two novels had been completed, 'a set of the galley proofs was then made over to me, and I sketched out what had to be done.
