Description:
NY: Putnam, 1953. First Edition . Hardcover. First US edition (issued simultaneously with the British edition), very good. Nice rebinding, incorporating the backstrip and front board and the gilt titles and illustrations thereon, with new endpapers. Very mild foxing throughout, and slight stiffness to the page block (no evidence of any dampstaining). A few light pencilled notes on blank rear endpapers, with a few sporadic checks or lines in the margins of the text. Includes foldout frontispiece, many engraved illustrations, two foldout maps at rear, and an index; 686 pages plus errata page and ad at rear. The foldout maps have some tears at edges, but are complete. Laid in is a postcard from 1952 stating that the rebound book is ready to be picked up
