1938-61. First editions, first printings, of Volumes II-VIII, fourth printing of Volume I. This complete set includes a presentation copy of Volume I, inscribed on the front free endpaper to the publisher of the final volume, and Hoover's own copy of Volume IV, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. The presentation inscription reads: "To J. H. Gipson with the sincere regards of Herbert Hoover". James H. Gipson (1885-1965) was the managing director of Caxton Printers. His bookplate is on the front pastedown of the inscribed volume. The Addresses collect Hoover's post-Presidential speeches. After his presidency, Hoover lived for over three decades and was frequently openly critical of his successors, both Democrat and Republican. He was particularly caustic in his criticism of Roosevelt's New Deal and later the early foreign policy of the Cold War.
