London: E. T. Brain & Co, 1840. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. The moralizing art of William Hogarth, displaying London life of the 18th century in all its extremes. Included here are the eight plates of The Rake's Progress which portray the reckless life of 'Tom Rakewell', the son of a wealthy merchant who squanders his fortune and ends up in the madhouse. 4to, 2 vols: iv, 142pp [4], iv, 280pp, steel engraved plates, with frontispiece portrait of the artist in each volume. Later red cloth binding with gilt titles on black leather spine labels. Marriage a la Mode series (Vol II) is LACKING one of the six plates in the series; some damp staining at four plates in Vol II.

Good. 4to - over 9. 280pp, lacks dust wrapper as issued, illustrated, undated but believed 1880, previous owners book plate to front paste down, no other inscriptions. Decorative leather boards are complete but are rubbed to all edges and there is a small split at the top of the front of the spine. London: N.p.. Hardcover. Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Cooke and Davenport. Quartos. [303] pages in two volumes. Contains 146 of 148 plates (possibly as published). Absent are the last 2 plates in Volume II ("Before and After"), which were frequently left out due to their showing a couple just prior and after sex (still fully clothed). Otherwise collates complete. Hardcovers bound full publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt. The bindings are worn and bumped and are now housed in clear mylar or acetate dust jackets. The front hinge of Volume I is cracking and a type of flexible glue appears to have been applied to prevent separation. Text blocks are sound. All edges gilt. Undated, but appear to be from the 1840s-1850s. The title pages are printed in dark blue and red. Most, if not all of the engravings have their tissue guards. There is no tissue guard at the page describing the final plates of Volume II, "Before and After," and their…

The covers are rubbed and scuffed. 280 pages of text, illustrated with 150 bold engravings on 146 sheets, as published. The plates include 2 frontispieces and 2 pictorial title pages.
