Description:
London: C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1897. [Speculative fiction] FIRST EDITION, first Issue. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[viii]; 246; [2] advertisements. With page 1 incorrectly numbered as 2. Attractively bound in full burgundy oasis, gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, top edge gilt, original cover bound in at rear. A very good copy with the usual edge tanning to notoriously cheap paper used, four leaves with expertly repaired tear at fore-edge( pp.39-46), likely when bound; the binding is modern, but showing a little vintage (made in the last 30 years). Shows well. A commentary on the misuse of science for selfish ends. Completely unbelievable in the light of what we now know; any man made miraculously invisible would occupy his entire time with spying on naked people, staying in pubs after they'd closed and tracking down people who were mean to him in school and making their lives a misery. And spying on naked people.
