Description:
London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1786 Second edition, bound from the sheets of the first edition (1785). Contemporary sheep over marbled boards, gilt-ruled flat spines with olive morocco labels. Three volumes, octavo. . Dedicated to Elizabeth Carter, prominent blue-stocking, esteemed translator of Epictetus, and friend of Samuel Johnson. Bound with the half-titles. Leather, board edges a bit rubbed, shallow crack in spine of Vol. III. Old small book label in each volume. Overall a very good, tight copy. William Hayley (1745-1820), friend of Blake and Cowper, is best known for The Triumphs of Temper (1781) and The Triumphs of Music (1804). Though he was offered the poet laureateship in 1790, his work was not highly regarded among his peers. Byron ridiculed him in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, and Southey said of him, "Everything about that man is good except his poetry." According to the D.N.B., the present work is one of his few that is "still readable."

London: Cadell, 1785. First edn. 8vo, pp. 261, 250, 255. Bound with the half-titles in contemporary calf, rebacked, armorial bookplates, a very nice set. Rare. Halkett & Laing IV, 336; CBEL II, 364. Hayley (1745-1820), a poet of Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, was a friend of Cowper, Blake, Romney and Southey. He was well thought of personally, but diminished as a poet. The DNB notes that this work is one of his most readable. Here, he writes:" It is my intention ... to redress all the wrongs of the autumnal maiden, and to place her, if possible, in a state of honour, content, and comfort." William Hayley's(1745-1820)work was not highly regarded by his peers during his lifetime, but Old Maids details an interesting eighteenth-century perspective on the lives, morals, and sexualities of older women. These volumes present a history of single, older women in society from ancient times and includes examples of the treatment of older women from literature. Hayley writes, "It is my intention...to…

London: Printed for T. Cadell..., 1785. FIRST EDITION. 3 volumes. 8vo, 178 x 110 mms. pp. [iii] - xix [xx blank], 261 [262 blank]; [ii], 250; [ii], 255 [256 blank], attractively bound in full contemporary calf, ornate gilt borders on covers, neatly rebaccked with spine richly and ornately gilt in compartments, black leather labels laid down, marbled edges and end-papers; lacks half-titles, some very slight flaws to binding but a very good to near fine set. John Johnson, the editor of Memoirs of the Life and Writings of William Hayley (1823), records that "Never was a book projected and written with more guileless or more benevolent intentions, yet a host of prudes and hypocrites railed against it, as immoral and irreligious.... Conscious of his pure intentions in composing the essay, he only smiled at the mistake of those rigid ladies who reviled the production as indecent and irreligious; and he exulted in the warm applause of several most accomplished and candid members of the…
