Philadelphia: John C. Winston Co./The International Press, 1902. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 2 vols. x,377,(1);vi,374pp. Index in each vol. Original red linen dust jackets with gilt lettered spines (a bit darkened). Pictorial red cloth beautifully stamped in gilt. T.e.g. Illustrated with 50 photogravure plates, each with a printed tissue guard. Large folding color map tipped in at rear of Volume II. Inner rear hinge of Vol. II cracked but holding soundly. Bookplates on front pastedowns. One leaf in Vol. II (page 189-190) with a small closed tear (no loss of text). Still a very nice, bright set.

Beautifully illustrated blue-green cloth publisher’s binding, gilt cranes embossed on front covers, gilt lettering & decoration on spines, t.e.g., red silk book marks (very slight pulling to inner hinges), w/ blue-green linen paper-backed d.j.s, gilt lettering on spines (slight bumping to head of spine vol. II, very slight shelfwear) NF/NF set/ First Winston Photogravure Books edition, with photogravures of this splendid travel memoir and social history of Japan. Hartshorne (1860-1957), lived in Japan with her father in the 1880s, and later remained as a teacher. She assisted Nitobe Inazo in writing Bushido: the soul of Japan, who in turn helped her with this work.
