T.e.g. Illustrated with 50 photogravure plates, each with a printed tissue guard. Large folding color map tipped in at rear of Volume II. Inner rear hinge of Vol. II cracked but holding soundly. Bookplates on front pastedowns. One leaf in Vol. II (page 189-190) with a small closed tear (no loss of text). Still a very nice, bright set.

II, very slight shelfwear) NF/NF set/ First Winston Photogravure Books edition, with photogravures of this splendid travel memoir and social history of Japan. Hartshorne (1860-1957), lived in Japan with her father in the 1880s, and later remained as a teacher. She assisted Nitobe Inazo in writing Bushido: the soul of Japan, who in turn helped her with this work.
