Bound in an octavo hardcover format, bright red cloth covers with a blind-stamped illustration to front cover, bright and distinctive gilt lettering to spine, deckled fore-edge, and plentiful illustrations in black-and-white. This work of social history recounts the period in the 1880s when lawless bands of vigilantes marauded throughout the State of Indiana and then spread to adjacent and non-contiguous states, including, eventually, to California, akin to the ways in which the Knights of the Golden Circle spread terror prior to the Civil War. Whitecapping is a phenomenon that occurred specifically in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally a ritualized form of enforcing community standards, appropriate behavior and traditional rights. However, as it spread throughout North America it took on a distinct racial characteristic.
