Head and tail of spine damaged with some loss, now restored. Virtually free of foxing but occasional offsetting especially to the portrait of Goldsmith. Other than my own perusal for this review, the book appears unread. Full contemporary panelled calf with gilt and blind decoration. Marbled text edges and endpapers. Engraved frontis of Oliver Goldsmith.

London: Heptinstall, 1800. Hardcover bound in brown leather with gilt decoration and gilt printing to spine. Board edges and corners are rubbed, scores to front board and stickers to front pastedown. Hinge break at title page, creased lower corners of final few pages, tanning to endpapers and marks to page block face. Text is clean and clear, very good condition for age. AD. leather. Very Good. At least three gutter cracks within. Measuring just over 3" x 5", this would make a lovely gift for anyone who likes little books! .

Although "The Vicar" is classic English literature, Ireland claims its author (1728-1774) as one of their own. Goldsmith's friend Samuel Johnson arranged for its initial publication, yielding sixty pounds to the destitute author. It became immensely popular as a "sentimental" novel, though Quercus tends to the Celtic view that it is rather exquisite satire. This is a lovely, small, early edition, in Very Good Plus to Near Fine condition. Full leather binding; gilt ruling on the spine, with a red spine label. Clean text; 224 pages. The text is exceptionally bright and supple. There is a contemporary (1806) previous-owner signature at the top of the Title Page. Mild bumping; the smooth calf remains nicely polished. Full calf, titled in gilt on the spine; the front cover and first few leaves lacking, considerable chipping to edges, some folded page corners, scattered foxing, a tear across the first text leaf of Rasselas, but internally quite clean and very good otherwise. This volume contains, in this order: Oliver Goldsmith: The Vicar of Wakefield (2 volumes, 174 pages, the two volumes consecutively paged). Lightly rubbed and marked. Bookplate of Alfred Jerome Brown to FEP, very occasional light spotting. A provincially published, stereotyped edition, of Anglo-Irish author Oliver Goldsmith's (1728?-1774) most renowned work. First published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield would become one of the defining novels of the eighteenth-century. Sadly the author was to profit little from the sensational success of the work, as Samuel Johnson had sold the rights for £60 in order to relieve Goldsmith from the pursuit of debtors. . With 4 wood engraved plates and 3 wood engraved vignettes from the workshop of Thomas Bewick. Contemporary full tree calf with gilt titles to maroon label and gilt fillets to spine. Joints cracked but holding well; minor loss at head of spine. Inscription in ink to ffep: "Josiah Wedgwood Jr / Septr 1804/ The gift of his uncle Thomas". David Walker commissioned Bewick to provide cuts for this edition following his similar arrangement for Goldsmith's "Poetical Works" in 1794; he eventually prevailed upon Bewick to supply them after a lengthy wait while Bewick worked on his own "Land Birds". As a consequence the plates are the work of apprentices and there was no further association between Walker and Bewick. The title-page vignette and one plate are hand-coloured.
