The author describes the peoples of New Guinea, the Arru Islands, Ceram, the Moluccas, the Philippines, Mindanao, Sulu, Borneo, Malay Peninsula, the Adamans, the Sunda Chain as well as Melville Island and North Australia, Port Essington, Carpentaria (Australian aboriginees). Hardcover. 8vo; 293 pages; 4 color plates, 1 folding plate (black and white) , 2 folding maps, 1 folding chart, and 2 half plates. Some soiling, spotting, staining, and edgewear to the red blind-stamped cloth covers with some cracking to the front hinge, 1 1/2 inch chip to the top of the spine, a 3/4 inch chip and some small tears to the bottom of the spine, and some staining to the edges of the inside front cover and front free end paper. Small chip to the top of the front free end paper. .

Original brick-red blind-stamped watered cloth slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities and lightly marked, with minimal wear to one corner and one small spot near the head of the front hinge; spine a little sunned; an excellent copy with the armorial bookplate of John Bagot. was a series of essays and reports on various tribes and human traits conducted by Edwin Norris. Norris included the works of various ethnology scholars including George Earl's "Native Races of the Indian Archipelago, Papuans". This volume is one of the best reports on the indigenous people in Papua New Guinea focusing on the aboringal tribes of Melville Island and Northern Australia.
This 1853 first edition contains numerous full-page and folding engravings including a frontispiece of a Dourga Strait hunter and a map of New Guinea!

Part of The Ethnographical Library. 6pp of advertisements, xiv, [4], 239pp. Modern brown half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gold. Four color plates, two folding maps (one of the seats of the Papuan Race in the Indian Archipelago; the other of New Guinea), one folding plate with illustrations of the different typologies of heads of Papuans and North Australians, two tables, one of which lists specimens of Papuan and North Australian dialects, and two in-text illustrations. Internally very clean with a few small spots to four of the leaves, very mild foxing to the verso of the plates and to the folding plate. A near fine copy. ; Octavo.

Important anthropological observations on the natives of New Guinea, but also on the North Australian Aborigines: chapter XII is devoted to Melville Island, Port Essington and North Australia in general, and one of the folding plates gives anthropometric comparisons between North Australian Aborigines and New Guinea natives. There are numerous discussions of Australian Aborigines elsewhere in the text, particularly those of Melville Island and Port Essington. The fine full-page handcoloured lithographs, produced in London, were based on drawings done on the spot by the Dutch artists Van Oort and Van Raalten. This is the first edition, separate issue (another version had the series-title "Ethnographical Library" which here only appears as an imprint on the plates).
