Folio, rebound in modern tan calf, illustrated with 153 full page plates and charts, including folding map; list of subscribers, and directions for book sellers on plate placement, table of contents is on the last numbered page, 655, [1] pp. Missing the preliminaries up to the preface on page iv. Lacks title page and portrait of Cook, preface leaf has portion of lower left corner torn away, resulting in a piece missing of about 2x3", with some loss of text, folding map is expertly repaired, but is missing a couple of small pieces, some pages have a few chips, tears and folds at the corners, there is some soiling and aging, and some offset, however, the contents are generally clean. Binding has a little wear, and a couple of minor dents, but is quite attractive. Overall, despite the mentioned defects, a very respectable copy. London: Alex Hogg, 1794. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes in one. Folio. pp. fp., tp., [3-5], 6-8, [9]-234; fp., tp., [iii]-iv, [5]-398; [399]-655, [1], lacking the subscribers leaves. With two folding maps and 173 plates, some misplaced according to the Directions at the back of the book. Good. Contemporary leather rebacked, titled "Portlock's Voyages" on the spine. New endpapers with reinforcements at the joints, some chipping to the new paper, foxing and a rectangular spot of oxidation to the original endpaper; some foxing throughout along with minor bumps and short tears to some pages but without any text missing; maps toned and with some tears and chips, damaged from improper folding. This combines Portlock's account of various voyages with a reprinting of the folio edition of Cook's voyages. Though some editions include Bruce's Abyssinia, Hodges's India, Patterson's Africa, Niebuhr's Egypt, Brissot de Warville's United States, Macartney's Voyages, and Portlock's Germany, this edition does not.… Read More

London: printed for Alex. Hogg, at the King’s Arms, no. 16, Pater-Noster-Row; and sold by all booksellers and news-carriers, [1784-1786]., [1784-1786].. Very good. - Folio, 15-3/4 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. Bound in full dark red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with rough gilt edges, a three line panel in blind and gold, with gold corner ornaments and blind trefoils. Titled "Cook's Voyages" in gilt on the front cover and between raised bands on the spine. In the center of the front cover is a sailing vessel of the period in full sail, tooled in gold outline, surrounded with a gold tooled circle representing rope. There is a small tear to the head of the spine and the joints and bottom edges of the covers are lightly rubbed. Modern full brown morocco, new endpapers, title in gilt on spine, raised bands, Folio measures (15.5" x 10"). Housed in slipcase, paste on marbled boards, solid hinges. Frontispiece portrait of Captain Cook, engraved by "Mr. Thornton," dated Feb. 14, 1779. Portrait frontispiece of Cook engraved by Thornton, 1781, General Chart of Cook's Voyages by T. Conder, 155 engraved plates, maps and charts as per the list at the end. Contemporary calf newly rebacked, a single pin hole worming from page 380 enlarging to a very small track and then diminishing, in the top marginal corner, the odd marginal mark and small tear with a small piece of marginal loss, overall a very good copy. *This version of the Cook travels, 'Anderson's Cook', was originally issued in 80 separate weekly six-penny numbers, later bound by the Subscribers, and subsequently issued by Hogg as a single volume.
