The original brown cloth boards are bumped at the corners and worn at the edges. The gilt embossed spine is torn at the front hinge and chipped at the head and foot, but broadly intact. Partially unopened in original dark blue cloth, boards blocked in blind, spines lettered in gilt. A little spotting. Rebacked preserving original backstrips, endpapers renewed, old cloth rather marked and soiled. The best-known work of statistician George Richardson Porter (1792-1852), written when he was head of the Board of Trade’s statistical department. A third volume followed in 1843.

Signed by John X Merriman at Schoongezicht, S. Africa on the ffep. Hirst was the editor of The Economist and Merriman was a prominent political figure and the last Prime Minister of the Cape Colony before Union in 1910. Ex-university library with usual labels, stamps, pockets etc. University bookplate to front pastedown. Gilt titling to upper board. Boards rubbed. Corners sl. bumped. Spine rebacked with navy blue tape. Crack at half-title but not affecting binding. Contents undiscoloured and unmarked but sl. foxing to publisher's September 1911 catalogue at back. 735pp.
