Edge wear, with fraying to the spine ends. Gutter split to the verso of the frontispiece. Uneven discoloration to the spine. Former owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Minor marginalia in pencil on a few pages. Fold-out fine.

Thick octavo; xxii, 672 pages, foxing, embossed pictorial brown cloth, heel of spine worn front hinge cracking, inked name Illustrated from the author's photographs and sketches. Ober was a naturalist who had long visits to Mexico to explore its natural features and its peoples. Dissatisfied with the adequacy of his nearly-finished manuscript, he made an additional trek to Mexico for added value and understanding. Folding map.

Boston: Estes & Lauriat. Poor with no dust jacket. 1884. First Edition. Full-Leather. Covers well worn around the edges. they have been separated from the book, then reglued. Interior is very good. No water damage, and very little foxing. The spine is chipped at the extremities, but the labels are intact. A very good reading copy of the first edition, but can't be graded higher because of the "repairs."; 6 1/2x9" .
