Contemporary pink paper-covered boards, printed in black, backed in gilt-tooled calf; plain endpapers; xxx, 336,[2], [i]-[viii] [9]-88pp; 7 full-page plates and numerous in-text relief illustrations. A sound copy, with general moderate wear, especially to board edges, occasional discoloration, but overall Very Good. Two detailed works of geography, the first with information on geology, "countries, their climate and productions; the prevailing religions, forms of government, and degrees of civilization" (including a bigoted racial breakdown). With geological diagrams and views of geological landmarks (Niagara Falls, Icelandic geysers, Giants' Causeway) and international capitals from Edinburgh to Beijing. The second work by Emma Willard (1787-1870), who founded the first American higher education institute for women.

In the original quarter leather and plain paper-covered boards, with the title written in a contemporary hand on the front cover: "Ancient Geography by Emma Willard, Author, and Principal of the Female Seminary at Troy, N.Y." Contemporary owner name and address in pencil on the half-title page ("Wm. A Willard [?], 13 Clinton St., Hartford Ct."). The leather spine back and edges of the boards are rubbed, modest wear with shallow loss at the head and tail of spine, endpapers are moderately foxed, lacking the front free endpaper, else a pleasing very good copy. In the original quarter black calf gilt and paper-covered boards printed on both covers. Two early owner names in ink on front free endpaper. The leather spine back is moderately rubbed, corners gently bumped, scattered foxing mostly on the endleaves, modest paper remnants on both pastedowns likely from a contemporary custom-made paper dust wrapper (removed), a very good copy with the printed boards clean and bright. Woodbridge and Willard collaborated on many geography texts and both shared a passionate interest in educational reform and the education of women.
