The two volume first edition of Lord Chancellor Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon's final work.Within these volumes the statesman, politician and historian discusses the history of the growth of papal temporal power, and 'papal usurpation of Supremacy', voicing his alarm at papal attempts to remove authority from kings. Hyde structures his work chronologically, beginning with the first three popes to the start of volume I, and concluding with a discussion of Clement X to the close of volume II.With portrait frontispiece to volume I.With the armorial bookplate of Henry Rowland Brandreth to the front pastedown of each volume. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1826, 1827, 1831.. Together thirteen volumes, eight for the "History", three for the "Life" and two for the "Religion and Policy". Large 8vo. A handsome and rather curious uniform 19th century binding of full Russia boards with close matching morocco spine and corners, the transition between the two leathers demarcated by a thin blind tooled border, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, an early armorial bookplate "Dieu Pour Nous" to the front pastedown, underneath which another pictorial bookplate of the (private) "Beaufoy Library". Occasional minor wear to the extremities, a handsome set.
