Hardcover. tall4to, 29cm, 5th edition, [iv],262,[2];[vi],263pp., two part in One volume, contemp ms notes on the front and rear free fly, in early dark brown calf boards expertly rebacked, gilt ruled raised bands, crushed crimson morocco label gilt, large endpapers are acidic, some-what foxed, corners on the boards worn, a very good sound copy (cgc) - Wing. STC D-208. Daniel's History of England was first published in 1612 and, with the Trussel addition, in 1636. The section dealing with William the Conqueror was published separately in 1692, erroneously credited as being the work of Sir Walter Raleigh. Samuel Daniel (1562-1619), chiefly remembered for his poetry, was acknowledged as one of the finest writers of his time and was an intimate of Shakespeare, Selden, Drayton and Chapman. Written by Samuel Daniel, a 16th-century poet, this book provides information on several topics through the reign of Edward III. London: Printed at London: [by Nicholas Okes], 1621. Quarto in 6s. Decorative engraved title page, [9], 222 pages, one column. Daniel had broken free of the Tudor chroniclers, he was minutely examining sources and citing them for his readers, in what was a more serious work of history. DNB says that "he wrote a prose as lucid as anything the later seventeenth century could manage. It was his judgement that made him reliable: he could look with sympathy as well as disinterest at individuals and the institutions they had to live with. He had a rare sense of the past, and an even rarer sense of the limits of historical understanding...By the 1660s, he had become Daniel the Historian." Scholars have also noted his leaving out Providence was disliked by churchmen of his era.
