Description:
Paris: Albert Messein, 1926. Third Edition. Very Good+. Third edition. #31 of 108 copies on Arches paper. [8], 48, [1] pp. Hand-painted veined vellum binding with hand-inked title and small flower decoration to spine, hand-painted green and gold ruled border to front and rear boards, bevelled fore-edge, gilt and multi-toned maroon marbled endpapers. Original wraps bound-in including spine as stub. Inscribed "Happy 1927 Aunt Martha + Uncle Levin [?] from [signed] Caresse / a Paris" on blank preceding front wrap. Beneath that Martha apparently regifted the book to one "L.B.J." (clearly not the Texan president!). Very Good+ with toning to vellum, boards slightly bowed; some loss to spine ends, small edge chip to front wrap. A fascinating production of what would later become Crosby's famed Black Sun Press.

Paris, Albert Messein 1926. Third Edition. Minkoff A-3c. Limited to 100 copies on Arches. This copy inscribed by Harry Crosby: 'Helenka from Harry Paris MCMXXVII.' Helenka was probably Helenka Adamowski Pantaleoni, the Broadway and film actress, intellectual and great beauty who later founded the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and became the president of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. Adamowski met Harry at Harvard when he was a student after World War I. She remembered him at this time as being 'an incredibly sensitive, high-strung, poetic individual who was wound up to such a pitch that even in those early days I wondered whether he would survive the year.' . . . Harry once took her to the Harvard-Yale boat races in New London, hired an airplane and insisted that the pilot essay some aerobatic stunts. The pilot refused, but 'Harry did… Read More
