Description:
New York: Sign o' the Lanthorn, 1898. Collection of short stories & poems by members of a New York literary club, of whom the best-remembered are the young Stephen Crane and his some-time publisher, Irving Bacheller. The group met regularly to hear each other's writings, of which, according to Wertheim's Stephen Crane Encyclopedia (quoting Bacheller), "Only negative criticism was permitted, and "the highest tribute that a story could receive was complete silence."" This book is apparently the club's only publication, and about half of it is Crane's short story 'The Wise Men', of a foot race in Mexico, also published that year in his collection 'The Open Boat'; (BAL II, p. 337). Number 61 of the edition of 125, this SIGNED by Crane after his contribution, as are five of the other six pieces included, all except that of Hawkins, purporting to reproduce a poem by a six-year-old (with 'klecksograph' illustrations reminiscent of Rorschach… Read More

Description:
New York: 126 William Street, 1898. Signed limited edition, this is number 47. Quarter, original half cloth. Signed by Stephen Crane at the conclusion of his contribution, The Wise Men. Also signed by the other contributors. While it was the intention of the club to have each contributor sign his piece, Crane did not sign all 125 examples, as he died at age 28 in the year 1900. In near fine condition, rebacked, charming illustration to the front free endpaper. Rare and desirable. Founded in 1893, the The Lanthorn Club consisted of young journalists and writers who would gather for lunch and a Saturday evening banquet, the latter event requiring one member to read an original short story and then open himself to criticism. Crane's story is the first of seven pieces in the volume and it occupies more than half the space.

Description:
Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated. 4to. Original green cloth, paper label on cover, rebacked. 126 William Street, New York (1898). First Edition. Limited to 125 numbered copies. This is copy # 52. Signed by Stephen Crane after his story, The Wise Men. Also signed by 5 of the 6 other contributors: John Langdon Heaton, Irving Bacheller, Post Wheeler, Charles Gaines and Charles Lewis. Cranes story is the first of 7 pieces and it occupies more than half the volume. It was once believed that he signed only 10 to 15 copies, but that number now seems low. It is safe to say he did not signed all copies and the number he did sign is in question. Crane died at age 28, and his signature is exceedingly rare. Scuffing to the front and back covers; paper label soiled; front endpaper slightly wrinkled; some foxing to a few of the preliminary pages; o/w very nice. Uncut; partially unopened. Scarce
