An attractive copy, published as part of a series of popularized science-related monographs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originally appearing in the form of lectures delivered before the Lowell Institute, "they aimed to present the modern theories of chemistry to an intelligent but not a professional audience." Cooke (1827-1894) is considered the founder of Harvard's department of chemistry, where he worked tirelessly to expand its resources and equipment. His work on the measurement of atomic weights inspired his pupil (and future Nobelist) Theodore Richards to pursue his own experiments in the field.
